Lo-manthang has a similar cultural heritage to Tibet. The
Lhobas ethnic group, whose cultures are akin to Tibetan, controls the majority
of the territory. Near Lo Manthang hamlet, twelve caves that contain old
Buddhist artwork and are perched on high cliffs at a height of 14,000 feet,
were discovered. Dates from the thirteenth century are depicted in a silver and
gold picture with Tibetan lettering. The majority of the artwork displays
Newari influences. There is a wealth of artwork and paintings in ornamental
caves that show many Buddha forms. There are numerous Buddhist Stupas inside
the caves.
Return to Kathmandu (1.30 hours)
